How to pick out a domain name

What's a domain name?

those things that end in .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .ws, etc...

how do we get a domain?

I register domain names as part of my service. There are a number of registrars out there but we use Go Daddy (www.godaddy.com). We charge $30.00 per year for domains that we register and connect to your web site.

Does the domain help with getting positioned in search engines?

THE DOMAIN NAME HAS SOME WEITGHT WITH POSITIONING WELL IN SEARCH ENGINES. We like to make that point at the outset since almost everyone not in the Search Engine Optimization business, and even a few that are in the business, thinks that it does. There was a brief period of time when a domain name that contained keywords helped get a good position in Google. We had the experience of purchasing a keyword based domain, and it immediately achieved page one position one results. Those days are gone. It would be too easy to spoof the search engines if it was just a matter of buying the right domain. A guy that sells books could simply get www.blah-books-blah.com and position well for all searches done for 'books' of which there are lots, even if his site had nothing whatsoever to do with books. Perhaps there are some smaller search services that pay attention to the domain name, but We don't even think about search engines when We select a domain. Oh, and one more point while we are on that topic. Notice that in my example above there are dashes separating the words. The search engines read actually language, meaning that the un-dashed version blahbooksblah.com would not be a recognizable word to a old search engine (google and yahoo are cappable to recognize that), since it is not a word in any language that We am aware of.
In resume, there are a lot of other important points than the domain name, although the domain name with keywords will help, but the most important point is the all the Search engine optimization strategies and a good web site design .

What is a good domain name?

One that is memorable, and spellable. Notice that We don't say anything about it being the name of your company. We live in Costa Rica, so We hear ideas on domain names that usually include Costa Rica. That's fine, but they often times end up with really long names for having "CostaRica" in there along with whatever the name of the business is. So you end up with something like www.costaricasportfishing.com. Not a bad domain, but it has so many letters in it that it will likely be mis-spelled first. At any way if it is clear to your clients, have sense, and is memorable, then go a head!
