Does MSN Search Favor IIS Hosted Sites
The objective of all search engines is to deliver quality, relevant, returns for all searches. Theoretically they want the searcher to find the best answer to their question. If that answer were to be influenced by anything other than relevancy, such as pay-for-placement, or some other influence, the quality of the search engine or directory would be compromised. Google's success hinges on this. Their returns read only what is found on the page so it has to be relevant.
Let's change topic for just a sec. The internet is mostly hosted on servers using Linux/Apache servers. This technology is not really owned by anyone and is supported by a worldwide community of coders. The rest of the servers run Microsoft technology known as IIS. Since the incarnation of MSN search as it's own engine, and here we are talking about free from any alliance with Google or Yahoo, MSN as an independant search engine, there is some concern that they would favor, or give higher ranking to web sites that are hosted on their own proprietary servers. This would obviously have a negative effect on the relevance of the search returns since the returns are affected by the server they are hosted on.

Frequently the MSN search is placing more IIS servers in the important top 10 results than Google even where result sets from a query have actually returned fewer IIS servers overall on MSN. "
